Picturestation is a joint project between Screengang and Distinct that has over 6000 photos in its collection. It's a photo exchange site in which photographers get two download credits for each contributed picture accepted into the collection.
Registration is required as you can't download photos without contributing, but you get 10 credits after registering. The site also accepts illustrations. The site's license agreement explains how your photos and other photos can be used.
The nice thing about the site is that it's community-driven and this leads to a diverse collection of photos. The site's features include comments, lightbox (where you save select pictures), rating and e-cards. Discover photos by browsing categories, using the search tool, or getting a random selection of photos.
National Park Service (NPS) has over 9000 images available in the public domain for use, free of charge as long as you credit the photo as "NPS Photo" or "NPS Photo by (photographer's name)". The photos are specifically related to Yellowstone National Park covering animals, fire, geology, park structures, special events and more.
According to the site's FAQ, NPS has 19,000 images and plans to continue scanning and posting those that aren't yet online. Images are neatly organized in thumbnails on their category pages along with their file names and a brief description.
When you click an image, the site loads the full size of the image and you can right-click and select "Save as..." It's a well-organized site considering there are thousands of photos with many more coming.

Travel the world in pajamas with Ixuz Travel, which is dedicated to collecting photos from around the world. The site has a Korean version of its pages. Currently, the collection has over 2700 pictures sorted in 85 albums and 18 categories.
Select a country to explore and these pages show places for that country or continent along with the last updated albums, last additions, last comments, most viewed, top rated and random images. Each image page includes details such as who uploaded it, album name, ratings and so on. The menu on top of the image lets you send an ecard with the photo or browse the album by going forward or backward.
Membership is required to send ecards and saving images into your favorites. The site also has a community through its forums, private messages and travel stories. Its wiki tour guides provide background information on various countries. Click Top 10 from the left menu to see the top items for most read stories, most commented stories, polls and most downloaded files. After you browse this site, you feel like you've gone on an adventure.
Freedigitalphotos.net has over 2000 free images for use in commercial and non-commercial work so long as you don't claim the works as your own, redistribute them or offer them for sale.
Browse photos by category or use the search tool. Each category has sub-categories, which could have sub-categories of their own. The sub-category thumbnails display the title and the number of times viewed. Click the thumbnail to see a larger view. If you want the image, right-click on the image and save it.
The home page displays a random image. You can refresh it to change the image. It's an easy to use site with a good collection.
ArtFavor has a collection of vector and flash clipart, sounds, fonts, photos, pictures and images that the site indicates, "All artwork and sounds are absolutely free and you can use them in commercial applications." You can download files in their original or zipped format.
The site has over 700 photos in jpg format. The photo collection lists many categories on the right side of the page along with and the number of pictures in each.
The category page displays medium-sized thumbnails along with the name of the picture and its tags. Click on the image to get its dimensions and file size. From here, you can download the image or view the image. In addition to browsing by category, you can use the search tool to find pictures. This site has a good selection.
BurningWell.org is a repository of over 1400 public domain images for your use. You're allowed to download, copy and use the photos for any purpose. Photos from from photographers around the world. The site has eight top-level albums (categories) and 27 in total ranging from activities to textures.
Each album has thumbnail photos accompanied with photo dimensions and a short description. When there are people in a picture, you not only need the photographer's permission, but also the subject's and some of the pictures indicate permission has been given. When viewing the image, you can view it at full size or normal size.
RSS feeds are available so you know when new pictures have been added. Find images either by browsing the albums or using the search feature. Each album displays the number of items as well as the list of its sub-albums. This is a quality site with a diversity of pictures.
Visipix is an art museum, clip art, and photo gallery with around 100,000 exhibits. If you publish the photos, the site requires crediting the authors and Vispix.com somewhere near the pictures. Per the copyright page, all copyrights are free. However, they can't be used in the sex industry or in the promotion of tobacco and alcohol.
The photo gallery organizes the photos with thumbnails and a short description. Browse the gallery by jumping pages, doing a keyword or syllable search or you can select one of four other search methods. The Help button explains how to use each method. The Clips section contains clip art, but most of them are not what most of us call clip art as they are like photos rather than flat images.
You can zoom in pictures with the site's Java tool. Just click on the image to zoom in and hold Shift while clicking to zoom out. The Start Mirror button shows a mirrored version of the photo and the Info explains this process as Western and Eastern eyes look at art differently. Each picture comes with multiple sizes; click on the one you want.
It also has two newsgroups: Visipix Photo and Visipix Art, which showcase more pictures. Beware these might be copyrighted, but it's not clear which are and which aren't. This site has many wonderful things to discover, so be prepared to spend a lot of time once you get there.
Photocase contains a repository of photos and a community that includes forums, polls, buddy lists and user profiles. The site was formerly located at photocase.de, so if you've been there — check your bookmarks to ensure it's updated.
Photos from this site may be used for commercial and noncommercial self-contained original work. You can download up to three photos per day. If you need to download more, the site requires buying download credits through its shopping section. Or you can upload a picture and for every upload, you get five download credits.
Photocase also has a magazine with articles, short stories and a photo contest. To download the photos requires free registration, plus it allows you to become a part of the community, upload photos and personalize your account. Photocase also comes in Deutsch (German). The collection has many high quality photos.

Thumbnail pages display the number of downloads and comments. You can also increase the number of thumbnails per page by clicking the drop-down box at the bottom of the page. The site requires free registration if you wish to download images. It's possible to find a gem in this nice collection.
